REALLY, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT?
A very wise man once told me, “Do not argue Politics, Religion or Sex."
In my case, I can see what he was talking about. I really don’t know enough about the first two and last one is no one’s business anyway. This being August and the Republican National Convention right around the corner I am going to take my first shot with Politics.
That shot is simple, while we listen endlessly about Mitt Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate, I will put this out there. Who cares?
That doesn’t mean I don’t care about the Presidential race, I do. Like every other Presidential race in the last 85 years, “This is the most important election of our lifetime".
What it does mean is that the selection of a Vice Presidential running mate is only significant if it breaks some sort of precedent. The selection of Sarah Palin was significant. The selection of Paul Ryan is not.
In history, how many Vice Presidents have had an impact on policy? How many have stood the test of time and been remembered as a great Vice Presidents?
Other than Vice Presidents that have taken over for a fallen Commander-in-Chief, not one comes to mind.
Now my brain cells might have some dust on them but unless I look it up on Wikipedia, I cannot name four Vice Presidents in the last hundred years and that says something for their role in the governing of this country.
The media has extensively covered the selection of Paul Ryan. His thinking and creative ideas will be explored for weeks. People will form and reform opinions about him and his ideology but in the end it’s not that important.
Mitt Romney is the Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. He is the one who will have to win the election with his vision of how our Country should look in the next four years. The role of Romney’s running mate will be to reinforce that vision. His own agenda will have to take a back seat.
The ticket is set. The grousing has yet to begin. The lines are drawn.
Let the games begin...
